Pink Granite Coast

Nowhere else in Europe looks quite like this: wind-sculpted rocks glowing pink and orange against a turquoise sea.

The Côte de Granit Rose stretches for around 30 km along the north coast of the Côtes-d'Armor, from Perros-Guirec through Ploumanac'h and Trégastel to Trébeurden. Its rocks are made of a rare pink granite, eroded into shapes that locals have named after animals, hats and even a witch. The colours are at their most intense in the evening light.

Ploumanac'h and the Sentier des Douaniers

The highlight is the Sentier des Douaniers, the old customs officers' path, which threads through the boulders between Perros-Guirec's Trestraou beach and the little harbour of Ploumanac'h, passing the pink Mean Ruz lighthouse. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed return walk.

Perros-Guirec and the Sept-Îles

Perros-Guirec is a classic family resort with sandy beaches and a marina. From Trestraou beach, boats sail around the Sept-Îles nature reserve, home to a large colony of northern gannets and a small population of puffins, with grey seals often seen on the rocks. Landing is permitted only on Île aux Moines in season.

Trégastel and Trébeurden

Trégastel has sheltered beaches between the rocks, an aquarium built into a granite chaos and a planetarium nearby at Pleumeur-Bodou. Trébeurden is quieter, with a lovely coastal path to the Île Milliau at low tide.

Nearby

  • The car-free Île de Bréhat is about an hour east, by boat from near Paimpol.
  • Lannion, the nearest town with a train station, has a pretty old centre on the River Léguer.
