Brittany has more than 2,700 km of coastline and hundreds of beaches. The water is cool (around 17–19°C in late summer), the tides are big and the light is beautiful. These are our favourites.

North coast

  • Plage du Sillon, Saint-Malo: a 3 km sweep below the ramparts; check tide times for the walk to Fort National.
  • Saint-Briac and Saint-Lunaire: pretty coves on the Emerald Coast near Dinard.
  • Sables-d'Or-les-Pins: a huge, pine-backed beach near Cap Fréhel.
  • Trestraou, Perros-Guirec: a family resort beach on the Pink Granite Coast.
  • Coz-Pors, Trégastel: sand between giant pink rocks.

Finistère

  • Morgat: a sheltered bay with sea caves on the Crozon Peninsula.
  • Plage de Pen Hat, Camaret: magnificent, but unsafe for swimming.
  • Baie des Trépassés: surf beach beside the Pointe du Raz.
  • Les Sables Blancs, Concarneau: easy, family-friendly white sand.

South Brittany

  • Carnac-Plage: long, calm and ideal with children.
  • Port-Blanc, Quiberon: a natural arch on the Côte Sauvage (admire, don't swim).
  • Les Grands Sables, Belle-Île: the island's largest supervised beach.
Safety: swim at supervised beaches in July and August, respect the flags, and never swim on the 'Côte Sauvage' coasts where currents are dangerous. Tides can rise fast across flat sand.
