Brittany is one of the better-value regions of France. With a few tips, it's easy to keep costs down.
Eating
- A galette and a bowl of cider in a crêperie is a filling meal at a fair price.
- Look for the lunchtime formule or menu du jour.
- Shop at weekly markets for picnics: bread, cheese, fruit and far breton.
- Oysters at the Cancale stalls are inexpensive by the dozen.
Sleeping
- Campsites are excellent and many rent mobile homes or cabins.
- Book gîtes for a week for the best rates.
- Stay inland and drive to the coast; prices drop away from the seafront.
Getting around
- Brittany's dual carriageways are toll-free.
- Book TGVs early, or try OUIGO low-cost trains.
- BreizhGo regional buses are cheap between towns.
Free things to do
- Walking the GR34 and the Saint-Malo ramparts.
- Pointe du Raz, Pointe Saint-Mathieu and Cap Fréhel viewpoints (parking may be charged).
- Brocéliande's legendary sites and Huelgoat forest.
- Viewing the Carnac stones from the paths.
When to go
May, June and September offer lower prices than July and August, with long days and fewer crowds.
